Coastal Flooding Risk Consulting

There are three kinds of ocean waves to cause coastal flood, which are tidal wave, storm surge and tsunami. Tidal wave called as astronomical waves, cause regular change in the sea level on the shore. A storm surge is a coastal flood of rising water commonly associated with low pressure weather systems - strong wind, Typhoons and Hurricanes. Tsunami known as a seismic sea wave, is a series of waves in a water body caused by the displacement of a large volume of water by undersea earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and land slide.

They are long waves which has a long wave length and period. Long wave could be inundated far inland and cause catastrophic losses to coastal lowland. New construction projects, industrial, commercial and residential building and facilities located at coastal lowland could be provided engineering and risk management solution to protect their building and business by GLCC's Coastal Flooding Risk consulting program.

It is also targeted toward operating or newly constructed ports, terminals, or shipbuilding yard, to evaluate surge risks using past earthquake or wind storm. We provide needed risk management solution against each coastal disaster.

Tsunami risk assessment
Historical earthquake and tsunami records are statistically reviewed to estimate magnitude of possible undersea earthquake, and to predict tsunami height, inundated area and arrival time to the site. Tsunami wave power is estimated when it attacks structure and evaluate its stability. Evacuation guideline and the Emergency Response Plan when tsunami attack are provided based on expert's opinion.
Storm surge risk assessment
Intensity and the best tracks of past wind storms are reviewed to choose the most affected wind storm to the site. Then storm surge height and inundated area, tidal level are to be simulated by GLCC's numerical model. For typhoon, times series of sea levels and currents are simulated along the typhoon track using timely varied center pressure, wind speed and direction, and tidal level.
Risk Management Solution
Expected damage based on the most possible loss scenarios is to be estimated. Through site surveys, we provide the recommendation to prevent loss for site, business, building and facilities by coastal disasters. We develop and provide the Emergency Response Plan considering various coastal phenomena.
